Music in your room, like it used to be.
your sound buddy · runs on Raspberry Pi
Lydtjommi is a small music box for a kid's room. It plays radio, podcasts, their own music and Spotify, with no screen pulling them towards the next video. You build it yourself on a Raspberry Pi.
What it does
- Radio and podcasts Live radio stations and podcast episodes, picked by you in the phone app.
- Their own music MP3s and audiobooks, with album covers.
- Spotify Your playlists on the box. Needs Spotify Premium.
- Bluetooth speaker Play from a phone over Bluetooth when you want to.
- Kid mode Tick what's "For kids", down to single Spotify playlists on a shared account. The box shows only that.
- Bedtime lock At bedtime the music stops and soft white noise takes over, until morning.
- Set up from the phone A web app on your phone handles setup, the library, parental controls and a parent PIN.
- Norwegian and English And your own language, if you translate one file. See the software page.
Why I built it
I wanted my kids to have what I had growing up: music in their own room, without a screen pulling them towards the next addictive video. Lydtjommi has no feed, no videos and nothing to scroll. It has radio, podcasts, their music and Spotify, with today’s technology behind it.
Just sound
Streaming apps keep growing: videos, lyrics, shorts, and now chat. Spotify is awesome, and Lydtjommi uses it. But a music player should be what it was meant to be: playlists, album covers, and sound. Nothing else.
The point is to get eyes away from the screen without losing the technology that brings the sound.
